Issue 029, Archived
Hello,
Welcome to The Newb Files, issue 029, Archived.
And a happy, if arbitrary (and late) marking of a full orbit of the sun to all!
News
A short one, as usual for the January issue.
EXTINCTION SPECIES
I am wrapping up work on my "final self-edit" before I choose an editor. I’ll finish shortly (41% done). It kept being delayed after the yard work extended through the fall. That’s Nova Scotia weather for you.
I still hope to query in the spring of 2025.

Freedom
by Hal Colebatch and Jessica Q. Fox
A stand-alone MAN-KZIN Wars novel from 2020—it's available as an ebook only.
This book surprised me. As much of a fan of the MAN-KZIN Wars stories as I am, some are dreadful. Treasure Planet by the same authors is—hard to read. I have not finished it yet.

(cont.)
Freedom is a treasure. Sorry about that. This book follows H′char′n, a downed pilot of a failed kzin kamikaze attack on Earth. It quickly becomes obvious that he is not your ordinary kzin. His adventures on Earth are full of twists and turns when he gets hunted, captured, and released on his honor. Not necessarily in that order.
The realistic clashes (mental, social, etc.) of two intelligent species reach new heights in the story of this man-kzin war novel. It delves deeper into the not always honorable (from a kzinti perspective) human mores and culture of the times. Ditto for the kzinti. ...
The reality of (humans and kzinti) annoying the shit out of each other is clever and engaging.
From a writer′s perspective, the structure, characters, and plot work so well. It may be a little long, but it′s easy to excuse. Overall, it is truly a reason to forgive them for Treasure Planet.
I will not give it away, but this book has an extremely satisfying ending, which is giving away more than usual for me.
